- En philosophie, parler d'être humain, en lieu et place du terme générique d'« homme », c'est emprunter la voie qui tente de répondre à « la question centrale en toute anthropologie telle qu'elle a été formulée par Emmanuel Kant, dans le sens où il se la posait, « Qu'est-ce que l'homme ? » « Was ist der Mensch » ». Dans cet esprit, le questionnement porte sur sa nature intime, plutôt animal ou plutôt proche d'une nature divine, libre ou étroitement conditionné par son milieu, l'être humain, dans la diversité de ses figures historiques, capable du meilleur comme du pire fascine depuis l'origine la pensée philosophique occidentale. L'article tente de résumer les principales étapes de cette compréhension de l'homme par lui-même, depuis l'ancienne Grèce jusqu'à nos jours, de la période où triomphe le sujet cartésien jusqu'à sa récente dissolution dans la « phénoménologie » contemporaine. Après un bref regard sur le sens général de l'expression « Être humain », l'article poursuit par un bref résumé historique sur sa perception philosophique depuis les premières interrogations de l'homme grec sur lui-même en passant par l'humanisme de la Renaissance jusqu'à l'antihumanisme de la philosophie moderne. Une fois reconnues les questions traditionnelles telles que la condition humaine et la dignité humaine l'article résume la vision cartésienne des lumières avec comme sous bassement l'irruption du sujet roi. Le courant phénoménologique contemporain, avec Edmund Husserl et Martin Heidegger va ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives et la voie à un nouvel humanisme. (fr)
