- Les îles Kouriles (en russe : Курильские острова, Kourilskie ostrova) sont un archipel d'îles volcaniques alignées selon un axe sud-ouest nord-est sur 1 176 kilomètres entre le large de la ville de Shibetsu, à l’extrémité est de l'île japonaise d’Hokkaidō, et la pointe sud de la péninsule du Kamtchatka. Cet alignement insulaire constitue la limite entre la mer d'Okhotsk au nord-ouest et l'océan Pacifique au sud-est. Au cours de l'histoire, l'archipel, initialement peuplé d'Aïnous et sporadiquement fréquenté par des marchands, chasseurs, trappeurs et pêcheurs d’origines diverses (y compris ouest-européennes depuis 1643), a commencé à être revendiqué par des États à partir du XVIIe siècle, puis a changé plusieurs fois de statut ; il est aujourd’hui rattaché à la Russie (oblast de Sakhaline), mais les îles les plus méridionales sont revendiquées par le Japon. En japonais, l’archipel est appelé Chishima rettō (千島列島), ce qui signifie « l'archipel des mille îles », ou, plus rarement, Kuriru rettō (クリル列島) : l'« archipel des Kouriles ».
