- Gratien (en latin : Flavius Gratianus Augustus), né en 359 à Sirmium (actuelle Sremska Mitrovica en Serbie) et mort le 25 août 383 à Lugdunum, régna sur la partie occidentale de l’Empire romain de 367 à 383. Fils ainé de l’empereur Valentinien Ier, il accompagna son père au cours de campagnes sur les frontières du Rhin et du Danube. Élevé au rang d’Auguste en 367, il sera coempereur avec son père jusqu’à la mort de celui-ci en 375. Il gouverna alors la partie occidentale de l’Empire romain de concert avec son demi-frère, Valentinien II, également acclamé auguste par les généraux de Pannonie. Son oncle, Valens, était déjà empereur dans la partie orientale de l’empire. Par la suite, il fit campagne au-delà du Rhin chez les Lentiens qu’il vainquit lors de la bataille d'Argentovaria, en 378. La même année, Valens devait périr aux mains des Goths lors de la bataille d’Andrinople. Devant l’urgence de la situation militaire, Gratien, devenu seul Auguste, le remplaça par le général espagnol Théodose (r. 379 – 395) qui devait par la suite être le dernier empereur à régner seul sur un empire indivis. Sa politique religieuse qui lui aliéna tant l’aristocratie encore païenne que les chrétiens ariens ainsi que son favoritisme à l’endroit de militaires étrangers lui valurent de nombreux ennemis. En 383, devant faire face à la rébellion de Magnus Maximus, « comes » de Bretagne, Gratien fit face à celui-ci près de Lutèce, mais fut abandonné par son armée. L’empereur tenta de se réfugier à Lyon où il fut assassiné le 25 aout 383 par un lieutenant de Magnus Maximus. (fr)
