Shen Kuo (chinois : 沈括 ; pinyin : Shěn Kuò, Wade-Giles Shen K'uo, EFEO Chen K'ouo), Shen Guo, Shen Kua ou encore Shen Gua, né en 1031 à Hangzhou et mort en 1095 à Zhenjiang, est un scientifique polymathe chinois, fonctionnaire gouvernemental sous la dynastie Song (960-1279) Homme d'esprit universel, il fut notamment géologue, astronome, mathématicien, cartographe, inventeur, météorologue, agronome, ethnographe, zoologiste, botaniste, ingénieur en hydraulique, pharmacologue, encyclopédiste, poète, musicien, diplomate, général, chancelier académique, ministre des Finances et inspecteur des services de l'État. Il fut également responsable du Bureau de l'Astronomie à la cour des Song, ainsi qu'adjoint du ministre de l'Hospitalité impériale. Shen fut un inventeur prolifique qui, dans son livre Mengxi Bitan (夢溪筆談, « Discussions de pinceau depuis un petit ruisseau de rêve ») de 1088, décrivit de nouveaux outils et instruments tels que le compas à aiguille magnétique, la sphère armillaire, le gnomon, le télescope, la forme de radoub, l'écluse à poids et la chambre noire. Il développa également des procédés de typographie. Il participa aux recherches astronomiques de son époque par ses travaux sur le vrai Nord, la description d'orbites célestes (Lune, planètes), s'intéressa à la formation de la Terre, à la géomorphologie et à l'évolution du climat. Outre la poésie et les sciences, il écrivit aussi sur la divination et le surnaturel, commentant d'anciens textes taoïstes et confucéens. Si son livre Mengxi Bitan ainsi que quelques-uns de ses poèmes nous sont parvenus, une grande partie de ses écrits a été perdue. (fr)
