- Victor-Emmanuel III (en italien Vittorio Emanuele III, Vittorio Emanuele Ferdinando Maria Gennaro di Savoia), né le 11 novembre 1869 à Naples (Italie) et mort à Alexandrie (Égypte) le 28 décembre 1947, est roi d'Italie entre le 29 juillet 1900 et le 9 mai 1946. Il est également, empereur d’Éthiopie entre le 2 mai 1936 et le 5 mai 1941, premier maréchal d'Empire à partir du 4 avril 1938 et roi d'Albanie entre le 16 avril 1939 et le 3 septembre 1943. Il abdique le 9 mai 1946 et est remplacé par son fils Humbert II peu avant la proclamation de la République. Il est le fils d'Humbert Ier et de Marguerite de Savoie. A sa naissance, il reçoit le titre de prince de Naples : comme son dernier prénom, qui renvoie au saint protecteur de Naples, ce titre est destiné à souligner l'intégration dynastique des provinces méridionales, moins de dix ans après l'absorption de l'ex-royaume des Deux-Siciles dans le nouveau Royaume d'Italie. Son règne de 45 ans voit, outre les deux guerres mondiales, l'introduction du suffrage universel masculin (1912) et féminin (1945), des premières formes de protection sociale importante, le déclin et l'écroulement de l'État libéral (1900-1922), la naissance et l'écroulement de l'État fasciste (1925-1943), la résolution de la question romaine (1929), l'intégration de plusieurs terres jusque là « irrédentes » à l'Italie et les principales conquêtes coloniales (Libye et Éthiopie). Victor-Emmanuel III est mort un peu plus d'un an et demi après la fin du Royaume d'Italie. À la suite de la victoire de la Première Guerre mondiale il est appelé le « Roi soldat ». Il joue un rôle fondamental dans l'affirmation du fascisme, dans la promulgation des lois raciales, dans les guerres coloniales et dans l'entrée en guerre durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Par son aspect précipité, sa fuite de la capitale après l'armistice de 1943 fut perçue très négativement, laissant à la population comme à l'armée un sentiment d'abandon.En 1946, il tente de sauver la monarchie en abdiquant en faveur de son fils.
