The best underrated shows in Chicago (original) (raw)
Comedy Fri Apr 08 2011
Chicago is known for its DIY culture, and comedy and theater are no exceptions. The options can be overwhelming, and not always a sure-thing, so I have compiled a list of five of my favorite shows that are currently running, in no particular order.
1. Crown Comedy. Crown Comedy happens the second Sunday of every month, and the fourth show will take place this Sunday. It's totally FREE, and the show producers provide hot jams and cool eats. It's 21 and over and takes place in the last remaining dive bar on Logan Square's uber-hip Milwaukee Avenue (@ Kimball), Crown Tap Liquors (behind the liquor store!).
2. Essay Fiesta. Essay Fiesta, which takes place at The Book Cellar in Lincoln Square, features five essayists each month, and all proceeds benefit 826CHI. While not exclusively comedy, Essay Fiesta is one of many prose readings that are popping up around the city, and this one is a sure bet for a good time. Admission is free.
3. Chicago Underground Comedy. Chicago Underground Comedy is produced every Tuesday night at The Beat Kitchen, and showcases some of the hippest, smartest, most talented up-and-coming comedians in Chicago. Shows are at 9:30 and are only $5!
4. the kates. (from the website) The hilarious kates provide an intimate night of comedy different from anything you'll see at a typical Chicago club or late night bar. From darkly amusing musical number, the awkward art of clowning, absurd solo performances, and uproarious stand up comedy, the kates continue to crack up new audiences and ensure that loyal fans come back for more.. The kates perform at The Book Cellar in Lincoln Square the last Saturday of the month at 7pm and the second Friday of the month at 8pm. $10 suggested donation.
5. Beast Women Cabaret. (from the website) A variety of genres are presented in this one of a kind all-female showcase. Each night highlights female strength through performance including music, poetry, dance, performance art, spoken word, burlesque. The Beast Women's opening night is this Saturday. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the event invite here.
