Patterns in citation context: the case of the field of scientometrics

Citation context holds a wealth of new information for citation analysis. In this study, we explore patterns in citation context in a corpus of 40 thousand sentences that cite publications in the field of scientometrics. Our focus is on two main features: integral citations where the cited author's name appears in the body of the citing sentence, and reporting verbs accompanying the citation. We describe how these features interact and follow patterns in these features in citation context over time, through the text progression of the citing article, and as a function of reference age. In future studies, we aim to expand the analysis by including other scientific fields and by extending our study of verbs in citing sentences.
