Abstract

This dissertation examines the four Violin Concertos composed by Jenő Hubay and traces the development of his violin technique in these compositions. In addition, his roles as founder of a Hungarian violin school and as a popular concerto soloist will be considered, along with his relationships with the dedicatees of his concertos. Chapter 1 begins with a discussion of Hubay’s musical style, and in particular, the late-romantic influences in his works. Chapter 2 begins with background introduction, and then provides an overview of the structure and forms of each of Hubay’s four violin concertos. Chapter 3 continues the discussing of the stylistic relationships between the concertos and their dedicatees. Chapter 4 covers the technical demands of the concertos and examines performance issues, including tempo, bowing/articulation, dynamics, tempo rubato and portamento/vibrato. Chapter 5 offers a conclusion, and a summary of the technical issues which appear in all four of the concertos.
