“Are you done yet?”

Maka was leaning on the counter watching him work, resting her chin in her hand, and looking either very tired or very bored—Danny was too tired to tell the difference. He looked back down at the sample in front of him, and shrugged.

“I have to take the sample, run it through the mass spec, all that,” he sighed, “Why are you still here anyway? You’re not even on this case.”

“You owe me coffee,” she replied, “You said you would get it for me after your shift ended. Therefore, I wait.”

“You know, we could just reschedule?”

“We’ve been through this,” she sighed, “Our schedules are screwy for the rest of the week, and I don’t want you to forget. Therefore, today is the day and I am waiting.”

“Maka, I can’t focus with you standing there,” he said, looking up at her again.

“Then what do you want me to do?”

“Look, I have to prep this stuff for the mass spec. If you go down to the coffee shop and pick up the coffee, and bring it back here. We’ll drink it into the breakroom while I’m waiting for the samples to run. Sound good?”

She sighed, “Fine. I guess that’s the best I’m going to get.”

She turned and started to walk away, and he shook his head, “Whadaya want me to do, huh?”

She gave him a look over her shoulder, and once she disappeared, he shook his head, “What am I doing dating this woman?”

“This isn’t sweet enough,” he complained as he took a sip of his coffee.

“I told them how you like it,” she replied, giving him a look as she reached for the milk. She poured some into her coffee and heading back to the couch in the room.

“Are we going to bicker the entire time?” he asked, tilting his head to the side slightly as he shook the bag of sugar in his hand.

“I dunno,” she shrugged, sipping her coffee, “Depends what we talk about.”

“What kind of an answer is that?”

“What it is,” she said, giving him a look, “If we talk about certain things we’ll be bickering, if we talk about other things we won’t.”

“Are you OK?”

She shrugged, “Long day.”

“Sounds like a bit more than a long day to me.”

“What do you want me to say, Danny?”

“Can I ask what I did?”

“If you do that, we won’t be bickering, we’ll be fighting.”

“_Kaile_—”

“Look, Danny, it has nothing to do with you really, it’s just—” she sighed and leaned back against the couch, closing her eyes, “—I’m tired, and I’m frustrated, and I don’t want to have to wait a week to see my damn boyfriend without any interruptions.”

He sighed as he walked over to sit down next to her, sliding an arm around her shoulders. She curled up next to him, still sipping her coffee. “I’ll talk to Mac about evening out my schedule. But you have to talk to _Gerrard_—”

“I can handle Gerrard,” she sighed, looking up at him with a smile, “He knows better than to yank me around.” She looked up at him for a minute, “You’re really gonna talk to Mac?”

“Yeah—I mean, he was married once. He should understand. I hope.”

She laughed slightly, before slipping an arm around his neck and giving him a quick kiss, “Thanks, Danny.”

“Anytime.”
