Smyshlyevka

2008

‘Smyshlyevka’ is part of the project ‘THIS SORRY NATURE’

Whereas the urban environment forms a central theme in many projects in Russia, for ‘THIS SORRY NATURE’ the camera turned towards the natural environment and especcially to Samara Oblast. This region, close to the Ural Mountains, is known for its intense industrialization during the communist era, and for its sometimes brutal distortions. Five large format photographs and one video signal a refined reference to the position of perception, notably that of the viewer, who looks with foreign eyes to fragments of the ‘sorry’ landscapes

The series ‘THIS SORRY NATURE’ was inspired by the poem ‘These poor Villages’ (1859) by Fedor Tyutchev.

Video installation & separate sound installation. 6:28 min. (loop), fragment: 1:28 min.
