Mark Wallinger: Labyrinth (original) (raw)

Metropolitan line index

The Metropolitan line is one of the very first lines on the London Underground. It runs from Amersham, Chesham, Uxbridge and Watford in the west to Aldgate in the City of London. The section between Chalfont & Latimer and Chesham is single track and is the longest single section between any two stations on the network. Probably due to there only being two trains an hour to this station, this is where the Tube Challenge that Mark Wallinger based the numbering for Labyrinth on, started.

The creation of the Metropolitan line led to the suburban area it served in NW London and beyond being called Metro-land. Some trains do not stop at all stations, particularly in rush hour. Chiltern Railways national rail services also run over parts of the line. Possibly the most important station is Harrow-on-the-Hill which has six platforms and receives incoming eastbound trains from all the western branches.

The section between Wembley Park and Baker Street is paralleled by the Jubilee line. In central London, the line shares track with the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines.
