We are a non-profit educational organization promoting the works and study of Lawrence Durrell, a writer most active in the second half of the 20th century. To support an understanding of Durrell’s place in modernist and postmodernist traditions as well as in a canon of world literature, we sponsor meetings worldwide, publish a newsletter and journal, and provide a number of other resources. James Decker has announced that the 52nd annual Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture after 1900 will once again feature a session sponsored by the International Lawrence Durrell Society. Proposals are requested by 20-minute presentations on the relationship of the profane and the holy in the modernist era. The deadline for submitting proposals is 5 October 2024. On Miracle Ground XXII, the biannual conference of the International Lawrence Durrell Society, took place on July 4-6, 2024 in Athens, Greece. And what a fabulous occasion it was! In addition to scholarly and creative presentations, attendees enjoyed a number of delicious meals together and a special outing on Monday, July 8, to the island of Hydra. Special thanks to Athanasios Dimakis and his colleagues and helpers for making this another memorable, truly international gathering.
As has been the custom for many years, members of the International Lawrence Durrell Society gathered at the Conference for Literature Since 1900 at the University of Louisville on 22-25 February 2024. A stimulating panel featured scholarly presentations by Umme Al-Wazedi, James Clawson, and James Gifford and was followed by nightly festive dinners together. The conference hotel, The Brown, is historic, comfortable, and beautiful. Another good time with Durrellians!
The 2023 White Mice Contest results are in! In keeping with the ILDS conference to be held in Athens in early July 2024, the theme was “Ruins.” As always, the poems are evocative and powerful.
