LEYTE GULF NAVAL CHESS GAME

Leyte Gulf Naval Chess Game is now published in Japanese in GAME JOURNAL No. 11!

And from my free plans you can build a cardstock model of the little destroyer escort, the USS Samuel B. Roberts, which was a hero of the Battle off Samar.

There is a thread about the game on John Kranz'sConSimWorld wargaming forum. Look under Boardgaming/Individual Game or Series Discussion/Individual Games. (Set the game list to "alphabetical." It really helps.)

And now: Here are the game's components, to print off and assemble so that it may be played. Players-students will also need a single six-sided die (or chits numbered 1-6, to be drawn out of a hat) for the randomized combat results tables.

• The Rules in unformatted .txt file, revised 25Dec01
• Game Design Commentary, Playing Advice, and Battle of Leyte Gulf history with bibliography, in unformatted .txt file
• Front page and verso, and charts and tables in unformatted .txt file
• Combat Results Tables, Game Sequence, etc. in html/webpage format.
• Japanese task force plot and victory point tables in html/webpage format
• Imperial Japanese units in .jpg format, revised 3Jan02
• Imperial Japanese units in .gif format, revised 2Jan02
• Allied units in .jpg format
• Allied units in .gif format
  You will want to print the units off at maximum size possible and then photo-reduce them from that, for best detail/quality. 1"--12.7mm--wide for the ships is about right. Japanese units should be printed/photocopied off onto goldenrod paper or cardstock. Allied units should be printed/photocopied off onto light blue or gray paper/cardstock.
  SUGGESTION: For the (units, map, symbols) .gif files, I suggest bringing them up on-screen on L-View or some similar viewer software and *then* printing them off. When I try to print them directly off the Web, I only get a partial printing, for some reason.
• Mapboard in .jpg format
• Mapboard in .gif format
  You will want to print this off as large as possible, and you should enlarge it with a photocopier after that, so that the mapboard comes out to a width of about 11"/28cms. Light gray is an excellent map color, unless your Allied units are the same color.
• Japanese task force allocation screen Copy onto green (??) cardstock.
• Allied task force allocation screen. Copy onto light gray cardstock.
• Battle board for surface gunnery duels
