Now the average rates are 31.80 RBL per dollar and 33.86 RBL per euro. Personal and Traveller's checks, as well as Credit cards, are usually accepted at all major banks in the city. Be careful TO AVOID exchanging your currency NEAR exchange offices.

STUDENT CARD

If you are full-time student, it is very useful to have a students international identity card (ISIC) with you, at least at museums you can save 50% on your ticket. Please, find a way to get your ISIC at

http://www.istc.org

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

**Metro:**You should buy a token to go by metro. One costs 7 roubles. One token allows you to make one journey with unlimited number of changes and unlimited time.
Please, don't do any video recoding or photographing in the metro.
It's a good idea to stick to the right side of the escalator - those in a hurry usually come rushing down the left side (by the way, running is prohibited)
The doors are automatic - so watch out not to get your clothes stuck or you may well miss your station! :)
NB: Metro cards are to be inserted with the black stripe upwards.

Municipal transport: In municipal buses (numbers without letters T, or K), trams and trolley-buses you should pay to a ticket-collector(he will most often wear a red arm-band which has nothing to do with communism). One ticket costs 6 roubles.
NB: You don't need to punch the ticket.
This transport has only regular stops and you can not get out whereever you want, so please, don't try to find a stop-button or pull the emergency brake. ;)
It doesn't matter which door you use to come in or out.

Commercial transport: In commercial buses (marked by letters T, or K) you should also pay to a ticket-collector, while in minibuses you pay to a driver when you enter. At some buses you pay to the driver when you exit. The price depends on the destination. It is always a label with the price on it (most often about 12 roubles).
NB: You can stop this transport where you want - just ask the driver to stop.

Taxis:

Please, be very careful on the roads - many Russian drivers like high speeds and dislike the rules.

SHOPS

In many shops and stores you need to pay for goods first in a special window labeled, and get the goods you want only after you give the receipt to the shop assistant.

Please be very careful with your luggage, bags, purses, credit cards, etc., especially in transport and in the shops!

WEATHER

Please, beware of influenza!

PHONE CALLS

There are many phones in the streets and especially near metro stations. There are several types of these. You can pay either by metro tokens, or coins, or phone cards (this depends on the phone). You can buy phone cards at metro stations.
NB: To make an international call please dial + with mobile phone or 8-_wait for tone_-10 but not 00.
There are two different types of phone cards:

  1. chip cards (used with phones with labels - or a similar but shorter label)
  2. magnetic cards (used with phones which have a blue label , - these can always be found near metro stations and inside them)
