A complete step-by-step guide teaching you how to set up LXDE |
Since every part of LXDE is kept independent to give the users max flexibility, they cannot be integrated and tight together by default. So currently users have to tight them together manually. This is quite easy. Follow the instruction, and you'll get your LXDE.
Step 1: Install all packages you need
- Download all packages you need from our download page.
- lxde-common provides a set of default configuration, and is required for the desktop environment.
- lxsession is required for running the desktop environment.
- The file manager PCManFM is in another project, and can be downloaded here.
- lxpanel is the desktop panel similiar to the taskbar of GNOME.
- Openbox newer than version 3.4.6 is required. Get it from their official website or from the Linux distro you're using
- gpicview is the default image viewer. (optional)
- If you are using Debian GNU/Linux or ubuntu, check if the packages are already in official debian or ubuntu repo. At the time of this writing, some of the packages are already included in Debian sid. Otherwise, you can check if packages are available from the following non-official repos.
- http://people.linux.org.tw/~andrew/debian/ (for debian)
- https://launchpad.net/~lxde/+archive (for ubuntu)
- Getdeb.net is another good place to find non-official ubuntu packages. (for ubuntu)
If the packages are not available in these websites/repos, install the tarballs provided by us.
Step 2: Cool! Let's start LXDE now
- If you are using display managers like GDM or KDM.
- You should be able to select LXDE direclty from them.
- Trouble shooting:
- If you don't see LXDE, try to restart GDM or KDM.
- If you still don't see LXDE after restart the display manager, please send a bug report to us.
- If you don't have display manager, and want to start lxde in console, add this line at the end of ~/.xinitrc:
- exec startlxde
