UFC Fight Night 59 results: Chris Wade works past Zhang Lipeng in foul-filled snoozer (original) (raw)
BOSTON – A trio of fouls cost “The Ultimate Fighter: China” winner Zhang Lipeng on the scorecards against Chris Wade in a clinch-heavy fight.
Aided by a point deduction in the second, Wade (9-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) outgrappled Lipeng (9-8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) to take home a unanimous decision.
The lightweight bout took place at today’s UFC Fight Night 59 event at Boston’s TD Garden. It was the fourth of six preliminary bouts to air on FOX Sports 1 ahead of main-card bouts on the same channel.
The final scores were unanimously 30-26 for Wade, who picked up his second UFC win after a first-round submission of Cain Carrizosa in his debut this past August at UFC 177. Lipeng suffered his first loss in the octagon following a post-TUF win over Brendan O’Reilly this past August at UFC Fight Night 48.
The bout came to a halt almost immediately after it started when Lipeng landed an illegal kick to the groin. After a break, Wade pushed into the clinch and finished a takedown, though Lipeng was able to get up and push him against the fence, where he landed another illegal shot to the groin.
Wade returned the favor in the second, but caught another shot south of the border that prompted a point deduction. He drove again to the fence and got another takedown.
In a battle for takedowns, it was Wade who again asserted himself while Lipeng was unable to get the proper leverage. Neither fighter did much to finish the fight, however, in a bout that plodded for 15 minutes.
“The low blows were confusing to me,” Wade said after the win. “Every time he spun me in that position, he had constantly hit me with a low blow. I’m not sure if he was just that inaccurate or what, but I got hit with more low blows than I got hit in the leg.”
