The Jorg and Neil show

Rangers v Dundee

Rangers 6-1 Dundee

Jorg Albertz grabbed his first hat-trick of the season as Rangers surged 13 points clear at the top of the league table.

The German combined repeatedly with two-goal Neil McCann to make sure this result was never really in doubt.

Dundee had pegged the hosts back to 1-1 but Darius Adamczuk's equaliser was as good as it got for the Tayside club.

The result puts extra pressure on Celtic ahead of their Sunday game with Motherwell.

Third-placed Kilmarnock's match with Dunfermline was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Indeed, heavy overnight rain was as much a danger to Rangers winning their game as the away side and the Ibrox surface was only passed fit after an inspection.

Manager Dick Advocaat stuck with the side that defeated Hamilton 6-0 in the Scottish Cup.

Jonanatan Johansson was again being preferred to Stephane Guivarc'h up front.

Dundee, the subject of possible merger talks with Dundee United this week, gave another run-out to Gavin Strachan, son of Coventry boss Gordon.

Early chances

Rangers dictated the pace in the earlier stages as McCann missed a first minute chance and and Steven Tweed did well to clear Rod Wallace's dangerous cross.

But Tweed spoilt the good work with a rash challenge on McCann after 23 minutes that gave Albertz his first from the penalty spot.

The home fans were stunned four minutes later when Dundee equalised in their first real attack.

Adamczuk won the ball from McCann then released Tommy Coyne before sprinting into the middle to take the return ball and deliver a stunning shot beyond keeper Stefan Klos.

Rangers stung

That stung Rangers into action and they sewed the points up 10 minutes either side of half time.

Albertz got the second, skipping away from Tweed and drilling in a fierce shot after Tony Vidmar had played the ball through.

The German helped extend their lead in the 52nd minute when Dundee keeper Robert Douglas could not keep hold of an Albertz corner.

It dropped into the path of McCann, who rifled the ball into the net.

Demoralised Dundee

Five minutes later Albertz completed his hat-trick after superb skill from McCann.

He got away down the left before scooping the ball into the middle for the German to make it 4-1.

McCann added to Dundee's misery in the 71st minute when he latched onto a through ball from Albertz and steered a shot over the hard-pressed keeper.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst made it 6-1 with two minutes to go with a blistering 30-yard drive following Gabriel Amato's lay-off.
