The name change was sped up before the release of fixture lists

The Bristol Bombers basketball club has changed its name after the terror attacks in London, their coach said.

The club was named in honour of the World War II planes produced by the Bristol Aeroplane Company.

Coach Danny James said: "We have to spend a lot of time playing teams in London who would probably think it insensitive."

The National League 3 side will be known as the Bristol Academy Basketball Club from the new season in September.

Mr James added: "It took about two weeks to change the name, the governing body changed it very quickly and fully understood the reason behind it.

"They even delayed the fixture lists going out so the name could be changed.

"The process would normally have taken two or three months to complete."

The Bristol Aeroplane Company built planes including the Beaufighter, Blenheim and Buckingham during World War II.
