Colin Cameron replaces Jimmy Nicholl at Cowdenbeath (original) (raw)

Former Scotland midfielder Colin Cameron has been named as player/manager of Cowdenbeath following the resignation of Jimmy Nicholl.

Cameron, who will be assisted by former Hearts midfielder Lee Makel, takes charge with immediate effect.

Nicholl stood down after the Fife outfit were relegated from Division One, having finished second bottom and losing a play-off to Brechin City.

The 38-year-old Cameron arrived last year as assistant to Nicholl.

And Cowdenbeath's website stated that he was "the unanimous choice" of the club's board to take over from the Northern Irishman.

Kirkcaldy-born Cameron started his career with Raith Rovers before joining Hearts, Wolves, Coventry City, Milton Keynes Dons and Dundee.

He also had loan spells with Sligo Rovers, Millwall and Arbroath.

Makel, who had spells with Blackburn, Huddersfield, Hearts, Bradford, Livingston, Plymouth, Dunfermline, Livingston and East Fife, joined Cowdenbeath in January, the 38-year-old having left Swedish club Ostersunds.

The 54-year-old Nicholl has been linked with a return to Kilmarnock as assistant to fellow Northern Irishman Kenny Shiels, who ended the season as caretaker after Mixu Paatelainen left to become Finland coach.

Nicholl was assistant to Jimmy Calderwood at Rugby Park until last summer, when he moved to Central Park while his former boss later joined First Division rivals Ross County.

County overtook Cowden in the latter stages of the season to force the Blue Brazil into the play-offs, with the Fife outfit subsequently losing their semi-final to Brechin, who finished fourth in Division Two.

Nicholl was previously assistant to Calderwood at Aberdeen and Dunfermline Athletic, while he was manager in his own right at Raith Rovers and Millwall.
