Shields signs for Killie

Greg Shields

Greg Shields joined Charlton in 1999 from Dunfermline

Greg Shields has moved to Kilmarnock from Charlton Athletic, with his new boss urging the defender to use it as a springboard to international stardom.

Jim Jefferies believes that the 25-year-old still has the talent to win senior caps for Scotland, despite a disappointing time with the English Premiership club.

Falkirk-born Shields had started brightly with Charlton as they headed for promotion to England's top flight.

But he struggled to regain his first-team place after a nasty knee cartilage injury in January 2000 and then a hernia operation in March 2001.

Now the player who cost about 370,000 from Dunfermline Athletic - it would have been nearly 600,000 had he made more than his 30 appearances - has arrived at Rugby Park on a free transfer.

But Jefferies insisted: "Now that Greg is back in Scotland, it gives him a chance to prove his international worth.

"Berti Vogts has been prepared to give new players their chance with Scotland.

"It is up to Greg now to challenge for a place and have Berti knocking at our door.

"He has the chance to get to the top of his game and he has already shown his attitude is top class."

Shields has signed on a four-year contract after impressing on loan with Kilmarnock at the tail-end of the season.

Jefferies had been keeping tabs on Shields since he left Rangers in 1997 after just seven league appearances in three years at Ibrox.

"I have always been interested in Greg," he said. "When he was at Dunfermline, I wanted to sign him.

"But I also noticed him when he left Rangers to get more regular first-team football.

"So I jumped at the chance when I knew we could get him on loan last season and he did very well for us.

"He was unfortunate with injury at Charlton."

Shields is Jefferies' second defensive signing of the summer, having paid St Mirren 30,000 for 29-year-old Barry McLauchlin.

His signing will be announced officially at a press conference on Thursday in the Moffat Terrace at the Park Hotel, Kilmarnock's new hotel facility.

Killie chairman, Sir John Orr, will head proceedings and will also introduce the new 50-bedroom Park Hotel, incorporating the Ayrshire Banqueting and Conference Centre, which opened for business on 3 June.

Meanwhile, Antonio Calderon was released so he could become manager of Raith Rovers, while another veteran midfielder, Ian Durrant, has retired from playing but remained Killie's coaching staff.

Killie were unable to offer new deals to strikers Tommy Johnson and Michel Ngonge but have been linked with a move for Sunderland's new Scotland cap, Kevin Kyle.
