Barnsley 2-1 Scunthorpe

Marlon Harewood scored twice on his home debut as Barnsley ended a six-game winless run against relegation-threatened Scunthorpe at Oakwell.

The on-loan Blackpool striker notched from close range on the hour after Iron goalkeeper Josh Lillis tipped Nathan Doyle's 30-yard drive on to the post.

Harewood capitalised on an error from Scunthorpe left-back Ben Gordon before finishing well on 83 minutes.

Scunthorpe's Michael Collins hit a close-range consolation in injury time.

The victory all but ended any lingering fears of relegation for Barnsley, moving them 12 points clear of Ian Baraclough's Iron, who remain third bottom and have now lost seven consecutive games away from home.

Harewood had the game's first chance when he raced clear of the visitors' defence in the seventh minute, only for Lillis to avert the danger at the second attempt.

Paul McShane volleyed wide from a corner shortly after the half-hour, while Scunthorpe's Joe Garner headed a Collins set-piece off target.

The home side were in front with an hour gone as Jay McEveley's left-wing cross was only cleared as far as Doyle and although Lillis did well to tip the midfielder's effort on to the upright, he was unfortunate to see Harewood tap home.

Another McEveley cross was only partially cleared with 10 minutes remaining and Barnsley's on-loan Chelsea midfielder Jacob Mellis lashed over from 10 yards.

Harewood settled the contest in the 83rd minute, calmly lifting the ball over Lillis into the net.

The forward missed out on a hat-trick when a lob fell wide, but the work was done and Collins' late finish made no difference as Scunthorpe left Oakwell pointless.
