Brunt's sublime 30-yard free-kick provided West Brom's second goal

West Brom enjoyed a first league win away from home since September with victory against 10-man Everton.

The visitors went 2-0 up thanks to Paul Scharner's header and a sublime 30-yard Chris Brunt free-kick, but Tim Cahill's close-range header halved the deficit.

Mikel Arteta saw red for a stamp on Gonzalo Jara and West Brom then extended their lead thanks to Somen Tchoyi's brilliant curing effort.

Youssouf Mulumbu sealed the win but was then sent off for a second yellow.

The defender was booked for racing towards the visiting fans after he scored via a deflection from Sylvain Distin's chest, and moments later was sent from the pitch following a challenge on Steven Pienaar.

However, the dismissal was the only blemish for West Brom on a day when they did not have to be at their very best to end their five-match winless run.

Everton had opportunities to level after the break, only for Jermaine Beckford to prove profligate in front of goal, and the defeat leaves Moyes's men just two points off the relegation zone with two of their next three fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Baggies manager Roberto di Matteo will have been pleased with the grit and determination his players displayed while under pressure - traits absent of late from a team accused of not having enough pluck to go with their pleasing-on-the-eye approach.

History seemed to be pointing towards a home win as the visitors had not won a league game on the blue side of Stanley Park since 1979, but West Brom soon eased fears of a Goodison hex.

The hosts seemed unconcerned when Phil Jagielka conceded a corner in the 16th minute as a tentative West Brom had done little to suggest they would pose any threat to an Everton defence missing their influential leader Phil Neville.

But with their first attempt on goal the visitors scored, the unmarked Scharner rising highest to head home Brunt's corner from six yards.

Everton had their chances but were thwarted by Scott Carson, whose acrobatic one-handed save kept out Victor Anichebe's curling 12-yard effort and later Arteta's rasping free kick.

West Brom were cautious and lacked cohesion, perhaps understandably so given that they had not managed an away win since beating Arsenal at the Emirates two months ago, but their fears were dispelled when Brunt's free-kick perfectly curled into the top corner.

Unsurprisingly, the visitors gained confidence against shell-shocked opponents but, just as Everton seemed to be losing their way, Cahill's trusted head gave the midfielder his eighth league goal of the season.

Buoyed, Everton looked in control after the break and substitute Beckford came close to levelling matters only for the back-pedalling Gabriel Tamas to hook the striker's shot away from danger.

After that it all went horribly wrong for Everton as their midfield metronome Arteta was shown a red card.

Admittedly, the Spaniard was brought down rather recklessly by Jara but Arteta's response, which was to stamp on the Chilean defender twice, left referee Lee Mason with little choice but to dismiss Arteta.

Beckford had two great chances to level for Everton - he was put clear by Pienaar only for Carson to brilliantly save with his feet and then the former Leeds striker blazed a volley wide when he should have found the target.

They proved to be costly misses as West Brom all-but secured victory when substitute Tchoyi cut inside from the left, did a little shimmy to bamboozle Everton's defence and then curled the ball beyond Tim Howard into the far corner.

Mulumbu added the icing on the cake late on after his shot found the net after a one-two with the impressive Brunt.
