Switzerland's Argentine coach Enzo Trossero has resigned following the humiliating 1-0 home defeat to Slovenia on Wednesday.
That reverse seriously damaged the country's chances of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup finals.
Trossero took over as national coach from Gilbert Gress in July last year and had a contract until 2002.
The Swiss Football Association (ASF) said it would begin its search for a replacement immediately and expected to find a new coach within a month.
Former Tottenham Hotspur coach Christian Gross has emerged as favourite to succeed Gress.
Trossero told the Tribune de Geneve that he would be returning home to Argentina next Monday.
"I don't know if I will return to Switzerland," he said. "I'm not the sort of person who stays to the end of a contract for financial reasons if all seems lost."
Switzerland's defeat in Basel on Wednesday left them third in World Cup qualifying Group One, six points adrift of leaders Russia and two behind Slovenia with three games to go.
