Galatasaray 2-1 Real Madrid

Brazilian star Mario Jardel netted a golden goal to give Galatsaray victory over European champions Real Madrid in the European Super Cup in Monaco.

Jardel, a summer signing from Porto, finished from close range from Fatih's cross after 113 minutes to give him his tenth goal in four games for his new club.

He had given the Turks the lead with a 41st-minute penalty, which was cancelled out after 79 minutes by a Raul spot-kick.

Real fielded new signings Albert Celades and Claude Makele in midfield alongside their most high-profile summer signing Luis Figo, the world's most expensive player.

Luis Figo

Figo had a disappointing debut

Galatasaray, reportedly in line for a 7m bonus from the government if they won, paraded new signing Mario Jardel in an otherwise familiar line-up.

Real largely dominated the early proceedings and a spate of tenacious tackling belied the less than competitive nature of the encounter.

Befitting his status as the world's most valuable player, Figo came centre stage in the middle stages of the half.

He shot wide after eleven minutes and then curled a free kick well over after winning the argument with Roberto Carlos as to who should take it.

The Turks took the lead after Hakan Unsal was blatantly hacked down by Ivan Campo inside the box.

Jardel was entrusted with the resultant penalty, and the Brazilian nonchalantly sent Casillas the wrong way for his ninth goal in his first four games for his new club.

Real introduced two more summer signings in Pedro Munitis and Flavio Conceicao during the second half.

Okan Buruk

However, their attacking endeavour was more muted than in the first half.

Claudio Taffarel did well to hold compatriot Roberto Carlos' shot after 48 minutes and Raul shot badly over when well found by Munitis after 63 minutes.

Galatasaray were unsurprisingly even less offensively inclined, although Korkmaz Bulent should have doubled their advantage after 58 minutes only to shoot tamely wide from close range.

Real belatedly raised their game in the final 15 minutes, with Makele coming close to an equaliser after 76 minutes when his low drive flashed just wide of the far post.

Leveller

The leveller came just three minutes later.

Savio's cross was adjudged to have struck Suat on the arm and Benko again pointed to the spot.

Raul put his poor performance and famous Euro 2000 miss against France behind as he coolly dispatched his spot-kick high to the net.

Real might have won the match in regulation time only for as excellent save from Taffarel.

The Brazilian 'keeper brilliantly turned Savio's low shot from Munitis' cross onto the post two minutes from time.

Minutes later Umit Davala's snapshot flew inches wide.
