Aberdeen v Hamilton

Highlights - Aberdeen 4-0 Hamilton

Paul Hartley made a dream competitive debut as Aberdeen captain, scoring three times from the penalty spot to help sweep aside Hamilton Accies.

A rejuvenated Sone Aluko was the catalyst for the win, with Simon Mensing's foul on the forward winning the first penalty after 18 minutes.

The second came five minutes before the break after Jack Ross fouled Aluko.

Zander Diamond bundled in the third six minutes after the break before Mensing fouled Chris Maguire in the box.

New skipper Hartley, defender Rory McArdle, Togolese midfielder Yoann Folly, former Cardiff striker Josh Magennis and goalkeeper Mark Howard had all been handed debuts.

Hamilton, who won on both of their trips to the Granite City last season, also featured fresh faces in the shape of Jack Ross, Gavin Skelton, David Buchanan and Gary McDonald, the latter facing his former club.

And the visitors made a bright start and Skelton thrashed the ball wildly over from the edge of the area following a Dougie Imrie cross.

Aberdeen almost broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion after seven minutes.

Aluko's curling free-kick from 30 yards was only kept out by a combination of the crossbar and Tomas Cerny, with the Czech goalkeeper also managing to stop Magennis turning home the rebound.

The home side did open the scoring after 18 minutes, when Hartley coolly converted from the spot after Aluko had been bundled over in the box by Mensing.

Aluko's low drive from distance was well gathered by Cerny before the Aberdeen forward won a second penalty.

This time, it came courtesy of a tug by debutant Ross and Hartley again stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to double the home side's lead.

Hamilton withdrew Kyle Wilkie for French striker Joel Thomas just before the break as a frustrated Billy Reid searched for a way back into the game.

However, it was Aberdeen who struck again after 51 minutes through defender and former captain Diamond.

Mensing fouled Maguire after 65 minutes and, although the forward motioned to take the penalty, he was over-ruled by Hartley before the captain completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

A Magennis header struck the bar as Aberdeen came close to an even more emphatic victory.
