Adam Rooney netted twice as Inverness turned in a polished performance to dump Dundee United at Tannadice.

Kevin McCann smashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from 30 yards on 34 minutes.

After the break Rooney found the target from the edge of the penalty area after good work from Eric Odhiambo.

Russell Duncan lofted a wonderful first-time effort over United keeper Dusan Pernis from 22 yards and Rooney converted a late penalty.

The hosts kept faith with the same starting XI that lost 1-0 to AEK on Thursday and United looked jaded as they failed to exert any meaningful pressure on visiting goalkeeper Ryan Esson.

The visitors were very well organised and grew in confidence as the goals flew in.

Terry Butcher's side were on top from the start and Odhiambo, who had an unsuccessful stint on loan at United in 2008, saw his low drive comfortably gathered by Pernis before Rooney rifled a shot past the post after seven minutes.

United had a chance to break the deadlock after 27 minutes when skipper Jon Daly was only inches away from connecting with a Craig Conway corner.

Having survived that scare, Inverness broke swiftly and Rooney twisted Garry Kenneth inside and out but Pernis was equal to his tame shot.

The opening goal came in spectacular style when a Jonny Hayes corner was headed clear as far as McCann, who unleashed a fantastic drive from all of 30 yards that gave Pernis no chance.

Caley Thistle came haring out of the traps after the interval and Hayes should have doubled his side's lead when he was released by Rooney but the Irish midfielder clipped his shot wide.

The second goal came soon on 51 minutes when Odhiambo easily turned Kenneth before teeing up Rooney who slotted home from the edge of the area.

And the noisy travelling support were treated to a sensational third three minutes later when Duncan pulled off an audacious shot from a McCann throw-in which sailed over Pernis and into the top corner.

The visitors were handed the chance to score a fourth with eight minutes remaining when Rooney was clumsily brought down in the area by Kenneth.

The striker dusted himself down before slamming the ball past Pernis.

Prince Buaben was unfortunate not to add a consolation goal for United in the closing stages when his neat volley rebounded back off the post.
