Highlights - Hibernian 0-0 St Johnstone

Hibernian and St Johnstone drew a blank in a dour Scottish Premier League encounter at Easter Road.

Edwin de Graaf's first-half shot was well held by St Johnstone goalkeeper Peter Enckelman.

Saints had the better openings after the break and Collin Samuel missed an excellent chance to put his side ahead when he shot tamely at Mark Brown.

Sam Parkin headed into the side netting as the visitors finished strongly but neither side could find a winner.

Maltese referee Christian Lautier officiated and his compatriots Philip Agius and Joseph Camilleri assisted in the absence of Scottish whistlers, who had withdrawn their labour after recent criticism of their performances.

Hibs made the early running and John Rankin's low drive was gathered by Saints goalkeeper Enckelman, who then claimed a dangerous looking cross by de Graaf.

The rest of the first half only rarely threatened to excite and de Graaf's powerful shot from 25 yards that was held by Enckelman was the only other chance of note before half-time.

St Johnstone were more enterprising at the start of the second half and Samuel should have scored when he latched on to Cleveland Taylor's cross but the striker elected to stretch out a foot instead of heading the ball and the effort was collected comfortably by keeper Brown.

The visitors then looked to capitalise on Hibs' slackness as Chris Millar ran on to a loose pass out of defence but the midfielder's shot was charged down.

Danny Grainger's free-kick deep into the Hibs box found the head of Parkin but the striker's header looped over the crossbar.

Hibernian manager Colin Calderwood made a double substitution in an attempt to change the pattern of play with Ian Murray and Colin Nish withdrawn and David Wotherspoon and David Stephens sent on.

But the play continued to flow in the direction of the Hibs goal and Andy Jackson, who replaced Samuel, turned in the box and had his shot deflected out.

Hibs moved upfield and Jonathan Grounds' low cross was not fully dealt with by Enckelman but the St Johnstone defence eventually scrambled the ball away.

As the match began to peter out, Grainger's curling back-post free-kick was headed into the side netting by Parkin.
