Madjid Bougherra

Bougherra will stay with Crewe for the rest of the season

Crewe have signed defender Madjid Bougherra from French side FC Gueugnon, subject to international clearance.

The 23-year-old Algeria international has signed a contract at Gresty Road until the end of the season.

Boss Dario Gradi told the club website: "Madjid impressed when he was training with us, and played well against Port Vale in a reserve game.

"He looks to be a leader and we need a few of those. His English isn't great but he can get his point across."

Bougherra's last appearance for Algeria came against Gabon last October, as they failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, striker Steve Jones expects to remain at Crewe for the rest of the season.

The Northern Ireland international, 29, is out of contract in the summer and could move on a free transfer, but told BBC Radio Stoke: "I need to knuckle down and try to score a few goals.

"I want to try and keep the club in the Championship."
