Iain Dowie

Dowie spent three years as a player at QPR

QPR have sacked manager Iain Dowie after just 15 games in charge at the west London club.

The 43-year-old former Southampton striker took over from Luigi de Canio in May and leaves the side in ninth place in the Championship.

Dowie won over half his games as Rangers' manager, with eight wins, three draws and only four losses.

Veteran midfielder Gareth Ainsworth has been appointed as caretaker manager until further notice.

A club statement read: "The board of Queens Park Rangers Football Club has terminated the contract of manager Iain Dowie with immediate effect."

Previously Dowie had parted company with Charlton in November 2006 after being in charge for only 12 Premiership games.

He was also sacked as Coventry boss in February when the club were hovering above the relegation zone.

Dowie guided QPR to the fourth round of the League Cup where they will face Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The R's travel to Reading this weekend with only one win in six league games.
