Great Britain were denied in their bid to return medals from every equestrian event at the Paris Olympics as Ben Maher and Scott Brash missed out in the showjumping individual final at Versailles.
The British pair, who combined with Harry Charles to win team gold last week, both knocked down the same fence early in their round.
With three riders going clear, England's Maher and Scotland's Brash missed out on the jump-off for the medals.
They finished in an eight-strong group with one error.
German Christian Kukuk went clear again in the jump-off to take gold, while Maikel van der Vleuten of the Netherlands won silver and Switzerland's Steve Guerdat bronze.
Charles pulled out shortly before the competition started because his horse, Romeo 88, was injured.
Team GB had never claimed medals in all six equestrian events at an Olympics. They still end the competition with five medals overall, two gold and three bronze.

Great Britain's team jumping gold medallists Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Harry Charles will all compete for an individual gold on Tuesday.
Three-time Olympic gold medallist Maher, the defending champion in this event, and his horse Dallas Vegas Batilly progressed to the final despite putting one fence down.
Meanwhile, Brash and Charles, along with their respective horses Jefferson and Romeo 88, both jumped clear in the qualifying round.
Victory for Maher would see him become the most successful British equestrian at the Olympics.

Great Britain’s riders have qualified safely for Friday’s jumping team final at the Paris Olympics.
The GB trio of Ben Maher, Harry Charles and Scott Brash finished third of the 10 qualifiers in Versailles.
Tokyo individual gold medallist Maher gave them the perfect start with a superb clear round on Dallas Vegas Batilly.
Maher had made a late decision to ride the mare in France rather than his regular mount Point Break.
Olympic debutant Charles had four penalties on Romeo 88 as did Brash on his horse Jefferson for a team total of eight penalties and a time of 227.79 seconds.
Qualifying was led by Germany (no penalties and 229.74), followed by the USA (six penalties and 227.57) with Belgium fourth (eight penalties and 231.52).
