Italy, who are the world number ones, had never previously been past the quarter-finals at the Olympics. The bronze medal was won by Brazil, who beat Turkey in four sets.

Cheered on by a raucous crowd in South Paris Arena, France won 25-19 25-20 25-23 when Wilfredo Leon-Venero sent a serve long on the fifth match point. They are the first team to win back-to-back Olympic titles in men's volleyball since the United States in 1988. Poland, the world number one team, were playing in their first Olympic final since winning gold in 1976. The US join the two sides on the podium after beating Italy in three sets in the bronze medal match on Friday.
