St Mirren clinch deals for McGowan and Hasselbaink (original) (raw)

St Mirren have continued their summer recruitment drive with the signings of Paul McGowan and Nigel Hasselbaink.

Former Celtic forward McGowan, 23, spent last season on loan with the Buddies and has signed a two-year deal.

Hasselbaink, who starred for Hamilton Accies, has penned a one-year deal. The striker scored four goals in 28 appearances last term before Accies were relegated to the First Division.

Saints boss Danny Lennon has already signed striker Steven Thompson.

A product of the Celtic youth system, 23-year-old McGowan made 39 appearances for the Buddies last season, scoring six goals.

Hasselbaink, the nephew of former Chelsea and Netherlands striker Jimmy Floyd, spent last season at New Douglas Park after joining Accies from PSV Eindhoven.

Thompson arrived at Saints on a free transfer before striker Michael Higdon departed to join Scottish Premier League rivals Motherwell.

Saints boss Lennon has recently tied up a number of his first-team squad on extended deals.

Midfielders Hugh Murray, Jim Goodwin and Steven Thomson, defender David Barron and goalkeeper Craig Samson all agreed new contracts.

Buddies skipper John Potter was one of 10 players told to find a new club last month.
