Elfsborg v Hibernian

Hibernian's Steven Fletcher is challenged by Helgi Danielsson

Goals from Matthias Floren and Emir Bajrami ended Hibs's Intertoto Cup adventure as they were comfortably beaten by Elfsborg.

The visitors found the going tough on an unfamiliar artificial surface, and Floren's first-half strike ended the tie as a meaningful contest.

Elfsborg had the bulk of possession with Hibs looking a tired side.

Bajrami completed an easy victory for the Swedes with a powerful long-range drive to double their lead.

Both sides struggled to carve out any opportunities in a quiet opening spell with Hibs looking to familiarise themselves with the artificial surface.

Steven Fletcher had the game's first effort on goal with a 25-yard drive, but the young striker's shot failed to trouble Elfsborg keeper Johan Wiland.

Stefan Ishizaki then carved out a chance for Elfsborg following a poorly cleared corner, but his snapshot flew just past the post.

Captain Rob Jones spared Andy McNeil's blushes moments later, with a fantastic saving tackle on Denni Avdic after the Hibs keeper had fumbled a shot into the path of the Elfsborg striker.

Winger Alan O'Brien was released down the left as the game opened up, but, despite getting in behind the Swedish defence, Wiland was equal to his cross into the box.

Disaster struck for Hibs shortly after when Floren's shot was deflected off Chris Hogg past a flailing McNeil to make it 3-0 on aggregate.

It was a cruel blow for Hibs, with McNeil appearing culpable for the goal.

Ishizaki then fed Mobaeck in the Hibs box with a dangerous ball as the home side continued to press, but Hogg recovered in the nick of time to put the ball behind for a corner.

The superior fitness of the Swedes became more apparent as the half wore on and they comfortably saw out the end of the first period.

The home side continued to monopolise possession in the early part of the second half, but a series of long-range efforts failed to trouble McNeil.

A lung-bursting run from O'Brien, in a rare Hibs break, sprung the Elfsborg defence but Wiland was alert and collected his pass before it could reach Fletcher.

Colin Nish then passed up a great chance when he skewed an effort wide of the post from Ross Chisholm's through ball.

Experienced midfielder Anders Svensson tested McNeil with a fierce drive from 20 yards, but the Hibs keeper took the ball comfortably.

The match seemed to be petering out when a left-footed thunderbolt from Bajrami flew into the top right corner from 25-yards.
