St Mirren v Dundee Utd

Highlights - St Mirren 1-1 Dundee Utd

Jon Daly's 89th-minute equaliser earned Dundee United a point and denied Danny Lennon victory in his first competitive match as St Mirren manager.

The Buddies had taken the lead 16 minutes earlier when new signing Sean Lynch sent a right-foot volley into the top corner from the edge of the box.

United's Garry Kenneth had a header brilliantly saved by Paul Gallacher and a David Goodwillie header went close.

But, with St Mirren ready to celebrate the win, captain Daly side-footed home.

Much had been made of the attractiveness of United's star players after their impressive showing last season, yet their starting 11 showed only three changes to the side that contested the Scottish Cup final in May.

With Danny Swanson suspended, Mihael Kovacevic recovering from injury and Andy Webster back at Ibrox, the trio to take their places were centre-half Darren Dods, Paul Dixon and Scott Robertson, the latter having been called up to Craig Levein's Scotland squad against Sweden this week.

Lennon has brought nine players to St Mirren for his first season managing the club, four from former club Cowdenbeath but has had to cope with the loss of players of the calibre of striker Billy Mehmet and full-back Jack Ross.

United seemed to be playing well within their capabilities and it was not until the 21st minute that they caused the home support to take a sharp intake of breath.

A free-kick by Craig Conway landed on the head of Kenneth and the Scotland cap's header down into the turf was only prevented from opening the score by a great reaction save by Gallacher.

Paul McGowan, on loan in Paisley from Celtic, was enjoying himself on the excellent surface at Greenhill Road and, from one of his intelligent passes, the home fans were sure they should have been awarded a penalty.

Saints' Steven Thomson connected with McGowan's ball and shot straight at Paul Dixon's hand, but referee Brian Winter waved away the appeals.

The Terrors did most of the pressing until half-time, with Morgaro Gomis attempting a shot from distance that went over the bar and Prince Buaben firing past the left-hand post.

After the break, United's Conway began to show touches of the form that attracted the likes of Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan.

On one occasion, he skipped away from the Buddies' summer signing David van Zanten and fired in a cross for striker Goodwillie, who narrowly missed with a glancing header.

Gomis then had a half-volley following a corner booted away from the right-hand post by Robb as United camped around the home goal.

The hosts were deprived of the services of Gareth Wardlaw for the last 30 minutes, the 31-year-old ex-Blue Brazil striker succumbing to a groin injury.

Lennon will be hoping it is not serious enough to keep the scorer of 19 Second Division goals last season out for long.

Until his departure, he had linked well with McGowan.

United had been enjoying the upper hand in the second period, but it was the Buddies who took the lead in 73 minutes.

The ball was played out from a corner and Lynch, lurking at the edge of the box, sent an exquisite volley into the top corner of the net with the outside of his right boot.

The Paisley fans were able to enjoy that advantage for a spell, but not for the entire 90 minutes.

United captain Daly was in the right place at the right time to convert the simplest of chances, tapping the ball home from close range from a Gomis cross to level the score.
