Celtic full-back Andreas Hinkel will miss the rest of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage.

The 28-year-old, who is in the last year of his contract, sustained the injury in training.

Capped 21 times for Germany, Hinkel was looking for a move away from the club after being told he was not guaranteed first-team football.

Summer signing Cha Du-Ri has started the season as Celtic's first choice right-back under manager Neil Lennon.

Hinkel, who has previously played for VfB Stuttgart and Sevilla, joined Celtic in 2008 during Gordon Strachan's reign as manager.

He remained in the team under Strachan's successor Tony Mowbray and was linked with a move to Hull last season.
