Manchester United have completed the reported 7m transfer of Serbia & Montenegro international defender Nemanja Vidic from Spartak Moscow.

Vidic, 24, has been granted the work permit he had been waiting for and is now expected to join up with his new team-mates on Friday.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV: "Good defenders win you things.

"This lad is really natural and athletic. You need good defenders and that is exactly what this lad is."

Vidic joined Spartak from Red Star Belgrade in July 2004.

The Serbian is part of his national side's "famous four" defence, which conceded just one goal whilst qualifying for the World Cup.
