Allan McGregor in action for Rangers

Allan McGregor had turned down a move to Blackpool

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor suffered debut disappointment after joining St Johnstone on loan.

The 22-year-old started his five-month spell at McDiarmid Park hours before facing Alloa Athletic in the CIS Cup.

But the First Division favourites suffered an embarrassing 3-2 home defeat by the Second Division side.

McGregor had been told by Rangers manager Alex McLeish that he preferred him to gain first-team experience than remain as deputy to Stefan Klos.

The goalkeeper, who has been back-up to Klos for two years, had looked poised to join Blackpool on a season-long loan.

But the deal fell through when he and the English club failed to agree personal terms.

Graeme Smith, who spent some of last season on loan at Ross County, will be Klos' deputy this season.
