Mr. Jonathan Wiley, a well-known city
business man, who died recently, came to
Sydney with his parents 78 years ago. Their
first home was in Kent-street.
At 21 years of age he was appointed the
first town clerk of Waverley. He next
became a member of the staff of the Mer-
cantile Mutual Insurance Company. He then
joined the Commercial Banking Company of
Sydney, and, later, the English, Scottish, and
Australian Chartered Bank, being manager at
Waverley of its first eastern suburbs branch.
He resigned to set up as an auditor and
accountant, and remained in business until
last July. For many years he was an alder-
man of Waverley. Mr. Wiley had a close
knowledge of the growth of Sydney and its
suburbs. He was a frequent contributor to
His wife, who died in 1932, was the eldest
daughter of the late Mr. John Macpherson,
of Holdsworth, Macpherson, and Co., Ltd. Mr.
and Mrs. Wiley were members of the Sydney
Philharmonic Society, under the leadership of
the late Signor Hazon. They lived for a long
