EDWARD FISCHER MARLAY, ESQ., J.P.,
THE HONORABLE JOSEPH DOCKER, ESQ., J.P.,
Brindley Park, Merriwa, April 18th, 1808.
MY DEAR JOSEPH-I trust you will exouse the
mode I have adopted in addressing you, but as
the only mention of. my name in connection with yours
for the last fourteen years bas been a public one, and
thus made publie hy yourself, I will offer no further
From the friendly feelings you have ever evinced to-
wards me sin oe we first became acquainted, I was led to
believe, that whenever in your power to do so, yon would
give those feelings full scope, and you cannot think how
gratified I felt at perceiving tho alacrity with wbioh you
seized the first opportunity that presented itself to do
It is foolishly supposed by many unsophisticated .in-
dividuals, that the more infiuenoe a man is possessed of
to do good or evil to those he dislikes or esteems, the
more guarded and cautious he should be in making uso
of it, particularly at the outset of a political caroor, when
in common with the reBt of bis species ho may naturally
be supposed to entertain a wish to gain himself a name
for striot impartiality and absenoe of personal feeling, but
you and I, as men of the world, know better ; we know
that human nature will be hnman nature, whether en-
closed in the person of a member of the Legislative
Council or a chimney sweep, and that it would be use-
less to pretend otherwise.
Instigated therefore by that kindly feeling of whioh
your truthful, generous, and manly nature is so capable,
and your possession of whioh is so well known and re-
membered by all who may have come under ÜB influ-
ence, you nobly took advantage of your elevation to the
honorable dignity of a member of tho Upper House, and
at the risk of being considered partial (although from a
generous motive you tried to conceal the fact), endea-
voured to relieve me from the responsibility of an oflflco
the temptations and trials of which no one is a moro
competent judge than yourself. You remember (?)
Docker v. Beams, Dooker t>. Coxen, &o., &c., &c.
I am the more indebted to you for these exertions in
my behalf, because the small acts of kindnoas and atten-
tion I waa able to perform for you and yours whilst re-
siding at Scone, certainly never oould warrant such a
return ; however, I can only thank you, and rest in the
hope of ono day or another being able to make you som o
more substantial acknowledgment.
From the length of time (fourteen years), you hovo
nursed this kindly feeling towards me, I think I may
safely take upon myself tho privilege of an ol.I friend,
and I would first make uso of it to ebide you for not
acquainting me privately of your intention to Btand for
the " three oountiea." You must have been aware of the
infinite pleasure it would have afforded me to have
given my influence here in your favour. Had it not been
that I perceived your elevation to a seat in the Upper
House, I should have been inconsolable.
Again, under the plea of our long friendship, permit
me to ask, why in the name of all that is glorious, did
you not first procure a seconder for your land scheme
resolutions prior to bringing them before the House?
Gracious me, Joseph, why what were you about ?
Only think of the days' and nights' study thal scheme
cost you ; the toil and trouble, the writing, and erasing,
and correcting, and fair copying ; tho references to old
Acts end Government regulations; why, surely every
moment you could well spare from thinking of me must
have been fully occupied. And, then, your speeob in
presenting them. How I can seo you pacing your study,
copy in band, committing ita more lengthy paragraphs
to memory, your admiration of this the first great effort
of your political ability, the grand soheme which was to
render your name celebrated in the annals of your
adopted country's councils ; and, now,-but it is not
friendship's task to add to already acerbated feelings
Do you know, I almost fancy that your motion with
regard to me may have had something to do with your
not having been able to procure a seconder for your
resolutions; that other honorable members, not seeing,
or perhaps not appreciating thorne feeling that caused
you to be so exceedingly pertinacious in my behalf,
were unwilling to identify themselves with you, fearing
they might be suspooted of sharing in oil your schemes
alike. If such should have been the case, ob, Joe 1 how
deeply must I feel for your disappointment ; how must
I regret that you Bbould have sacrificed the chance of BO
muoh celebrity for my sake. This thought haB oaused
mo, I can assure you, much perturbation of mind,
knowing you to be Bach a oreature of impulse, or as
jour own words have it, tho "Victim of impulse from
your youth." By the by, do you remember the occasion
upon whioh you wrote those words t Don't be alarmed ;
I am not going to remind you. You know I am not
suob an impulsive oreature aa yourself, and therefore
1 more considerate of others. However, you may be sure
I shall be anxious to hear how you bear your dis-
One more parting word. You must know how pain-
ful it would be to mo to be the oooasion of any annoy-
ance to you ; I therefore beg, for my sake, if not for your
own, that you will not allow any benefit that mny accrue
to mo from your exertions on my behalf to militate
against the inestimable advantages that tho public
might otherwise obtain, by the dovotion of the whole o''
your energies to its servioo.
Believe me, my dear Joseph,
P.S.-By tho by, I forgot to congratulate you upon the
great talent for invention displayed in your motion on
my behalf in the Counoil. I think I can do you the
orodit of saying that thero are fow men in New South
Wales who oould have "made so much out of so little,"
I have often' wondered, that with your well-known
imaginativo faoulty, you have nover tried novel
writing. Believo me, on the word of an old friend, you
would find it far moro profitable and oasy than a
