London League 1910-1928 (original) (raw)
The shape of the London League went through a number of changes in the seasons before the competition was suspended because of the Great War. In 1910 the Premier Division was divided into A and B sections, with Division 1 becoming a single entity again and Division 2 remaining as it had been. In 1913, the Premier Division were revised so that one section was for amateur clubs and the other for the reserve sides of professional clubs from the Football and Southern Leagues. Division 2 was discontinued. In 1914 Division 1 shrank to just five teams, four of which were reserve sides of amateur clubs, and the campaign was left uncompleted.
Professional reserve teams dominated both Premier Division sections 1910-1913. Numbers of clubs competing went down in both 1911 and 1912 and it was this that probably led to the restructuring of the London League in 1913. There continued to be promotion and relegation, but the best amateur sides could not match their professional opponents and this was another reason for the amateur-professional split. In 1914 the London League lost a number of its amateur sides, while gaining others. It has to be assumed that the outbreak of war before the start of the season had something to do with this.

After the Great War, the London League re-formed in a two-section format, with just 17 teams involved. With peacetime conditions having more fully returned a year later, there were three divisions and this shape was retained until 1924, when the League reduced in size to two divisions, with the number of teams dropping from 42 to 30. The team names make interesting reading at times.
There is a mixture of sides who went on to ‘greater things’ with others which have completely disappeared from the football scene. Added to the mix are teams such as Algernon Athletic, Derrick Athletic, Gnome Athletic, Gwynnes Athletic, Perrycobow and STD Athletic, which wouldn’t have sounded out of place in the Subbuteo leagues I used to play many years ago.
Quite how the constitution of the league’s sections was worked out is not altogether clear. The Premier Division was for first teams of the competition’s stronger sides, with a mixture of first teams and reserve sides of London and other league clubs. The league was obviously seen as a ‘third tier’ in the amateur game in the South East, on a par with the Spartan League.
