What follows is
the Isle
For centuries, humans have been blessed with supernatural objects of power. Some were treasured, some were used for good – and some for bad. Others were locked away, feared by those they were gifted to.
Many become myths. Most faded away, nothing more than whispered stories lost on the wind.
Until now.
Throughout history there have been the record keepers. Few and far between, they recorded as much of the past as they could, leaving behind encrypted records.
These records, uncovered by archeologist Winston Pullman, drove him to found the Isle with a small circle of close friends. Managing to decrypt the documents in the earlier fifties, Pullman and his friends tracked and recovered artifacts thought lost to time, some thought to have existed only in myth. By uncovering these treasures they also uncovered ancient powers. Deciding that no one individual or nation should have control of them, Pullman decided to build a vault to secure the items so they could be studied but not unleashed.
His small circle spread across the globe in search of the artifacts, founding bases for the Isle in many countries, and sourcing money and resources from many fronts.
Pullman hoped one day that there would be no need for secrecy.
That day hasn’t come yet.
Episode One: The on-coming storm
An extra-ordinary college graduate is recruited by a secretive, multi-national organization to search for, and secure, mythological artifacts. She’s thrown in with an established team in search of Poseidon’s trident, rumoured to have washed ashore in South America.
Episode Two: The vault
Elle visits the London base for the first time, and learns about the history of the Isle. While there, the Isle’s security is breeched and the team must recover the items that have been stolen.
// THE ISLE
Geoffrey Winterbourne (Peter Wingfield)
Formally an agent for MI6, Geoffrey spent most of his life ferreting out secrets from places and people he doesn’t care to remember. After a lifetime of service Winston Pullman, a friend and mentor, recruited him to the Isle. Upon Winston’s death, Winterbourne ascended to a role referred to as ‘Acquisitions Management’, placing him in charge of the investigations teams.
He’s never met the person/people who fund the Isle, and he knows that he never will. He’s also had doubts about the purpose of collecting so many potentially dangerous artifacts and containing them in one location, though he would never say it out loud.
‘This is something new and different.’
St. Claire’s sarcasm wasn’t unexpected. Winterbourne had spent enough time around the man to appreciate that it wasn’t a desire to irritate that drove him to such comments. ‘How so?’
St. Claire dropped the folder down onto the table, spinning the full-colour illustration around so it was upright for Winterbourne. ‘Potentially dangerous.’ He was reading the stamped letters across the bottom of the colour-copy. He tapped the image. ‘Tell me, Geoff, is there anything we
do look for that isn’t ‘potentially dangerous’?’
Winterbourne paused. A valid question, and one that he could hear Ian Trevelle repeating, almost verbatim, when it was presented to the team. ‘Problem?’ he asked. ‘I thought you enjoyed the challenge.’
Alistair St. Claire (Rupert Graves)
Growing up in London, Alistair had what he called an ordinary childhood – a normal upbringing with parents who loved him, and tried to provide everything he needed despite not being wealthy. He fell into archaeology – a passion he discovered at university. He loved finding history, filling in the blanks.
While at university he met Samantha Pullman, another student who captivated him with her dedication and wonder for the work they did. They married after graduation and travelled the world in search of ancient wonders. Their happiness lasted 10 years, until Samantha was killed in a hit-and-run.
Upon her death Samantha’s involvement with the Isle was revealed to St. Claire through her diaries, including her last, incomplete assignment. Using her leads St. Claire found the Sword of Peleus ahead of Winterbourne’s team and found a job offer waiting for him.
Elena ‘Elle’ Wake (Alona Tal)
Elle grew up in Texas, a regular girl in a regular family. She’s the middle child, the only girl, and she’s always had a big secret: she’s always been able to hold any object and know where it’s been, what’s its story is. Accurately. It fostered an interest in history that drove her through high school. As soon as she graduated school she left home and headed to New York on a scholarship, studying archeology and history… and trying to find out a little more about her gift.
Alastair St. Claire recruits her in New York after posing as a visiting professor from London. He asks her to use her gift to read a pearl supposedly from Poseidon’s trident in hopes to narrow the search. Her reading is so accurate that Winterbourne extends her a permanent position on St. Claire’s team.
He held out something round and shiny: a pearl. She’d never seen a real one up close before. It was beautiful, and sad, and she knew just from looking at it that it had a story to tell. Every object had a story, but very few wanted their story told.
That had been her experience.
St. Claire placed it in her hand, watching her closely. It was smooth and surprisingly heavy – though she wondered if it was actually as heavy as it seemed or whether it was just in her mind. Objects had personalities, in their own way. She closed her eyes and let the sounds and smell of the ocean overcome her until it felt like she was drowning in the raw power of the sea.
She saw the passage of time through the changing of the seas, the evolution of the animals. She was travelling back in time so quickly she didn’t know where to stop for information.
She willed the pearl to stop; begged it to.
Reluctantly, it listened.
‘Where are you from?’ she asked, closing her hand around the pearl. She wasn’t sure if she’d spoken out loud or just in her mind. She rarely did readings in public.
The pearl didn’t answer in words; objects rarely did. They told stories in images and the memories of others.
It showed her.
It showed her so much that she found herself fighting for a break in the information, for a chance to breathe. She’d never felt anything like it. The power and information contained in one small object was like nothing she’d tried to read before and it took its toll on her.
She let the pearl fall from her hand, an action of sheer will.
Reality snapped back into place and she found herself being supported by St. Claire, concern on his face, but curiousity in his eyes, like he wasn’t as concerned about her well-being as much as he wanted to know the answer to his question.
He picked up the fallen pearl.
She eyed it warily, it’s beauty undiminished, but now tainted somehow.
‘Well?’
His question was inherent.
As terrifying and confronting as the reading had been she couldn’t escape one simple fact: now she desperately wanted to see the trident. It was real and tangible and she knew where to find it.
She looked up. ‘I’ll do it.’
Victor ‘ Vic’ Wake (Connor Trinneer)
A former marine, and cousin to Elle. He knew the stories about her gift growing up and after he’s recruited to the Isle, he offers that knowledge to Winterbourne who sends St. Claire to New York to recruit her to find an object proving difficult to track. A good soldier, turned private security expert, Wake’s weapons, tracking and language skills are put to use by the team when out on recovery missions.
Alongside Ian Trevelle, Vic has helped build the security at the Isle safe house in London.
Ian Trevelle (Kavan Smith)
Born and raised in Chicago, Ian Trevelle graduated top of his class every year for his entire school career. Living and breathing technology, Trevelle is a self-taught aficionado with a penchant for computer games and solving unsolvable problems.
Recruited by Winterbourne after his activities became of notice to the FBI, Trevelle has spent the last three years redesigning a program used to identify and track potentially viable objects based on everything from long-lost fragments of stories to weather patterns, with a high success rate.
He doesn’t consider himself an adventurer and is less than happy when he’s dragged out of his perfectly nice, air-conditioned office to follow the team around.
‘Trevelle, grab your things.’
Trevelle looked up from his screen. ‘Huh?’
St. Claire nodded after the rest of the team. ‘You’re coming with us.’
‘Ah… no.’
‘No?’
Trevelle folded his arms. ‘Make that a hell no.’ Then he thought better of it. ‘Sir.’
St. Claire rested two hands against the back of a conference room chair. ‘Ian, I know you’ve had a bad experience, but we need you out there with us on this one.’
‘Bad experience?’ Trevelle shook his head. ‘I got
shot_. By natives. With_ arrows_.’_
‘It’s highly unlikely that’s going to happen again,’ St. Claire pointed out.
He shook his head. ‘No way. Besides you’ve got the new chick. The one with wacky powers. If you need me, you’ve got a satellite phone. You’ll be fine.’
‘Not a request, Ian.’
Trevelle swore. ‘Fine. But if I get sand in my equipment I don’t make any promises about the havoc I might wreck.’
Heather Markes (Rachel Luttrell)
A tomb raider caught by Winterbourne and St. Claire five years earlier, they were impressed by her knowledge of ancient history and the stories surrounding the artifacts they were hunting. Initially she worked with The Isle for a substantial fee; she still demands the fee, but no longer actively tries to steal their finds to sell to the highest bidder.
// THE VAN-HOLT CORPORATION
Lin Van-Holt (Naoko Mori)
Lin Van-Holt, married to Simon Morrison, is a vice-president of the Van-Holt Corporation’s Weapons Design program. Ambitious and goal-driven, Lin is a smart and not afraid to fight for what she wants.
Two years earlier she uncovered the existence of the Isle, an organization who tracked down and collected artifacts from history with significant power. Since then she’s worked on identifying known members of the Isle and tracking their movements and acquiring various artifacts and bringing them to R & D for possible applications in weapons design, with reasonable success.
Now she’s gotten closer to identifying the safe-houses, where more of the artifacts are stored, and Alexander Van-Holt has given her the resources to track and recover as much as she can.
