IT HAD TO BE YOU
9. The Way You Look Tonight
Afterward, they lay curled together on the couch. At some point, the gramophone had begun playing again, but the song had changed, a slower melody now wending its way through the room. “Yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm. And your cheeks so soft, there is nothing for me but to love you…just the way you look tonight.”
Hermione rested her head against Fred’s chest, watching his fingers intertwine with hers. “Your hands…they’re so enormous next to mine,” she mused sleepily.
“All the better to touch you with, my love,” he said softly. She snuggled closer and he wrapped his arms around her, placing a kiss on her forehead. Absentmindedly he caressed her shoulder, still marveling at the smoothness of the skin beneath his fingers. He had never adored anyone as much as he adored her, and he wanted to somehow tell her this, wanted her to know, just in case he hadn’t said enough and she didn’t quite understand.
“Fred, there’s some things I’m wondering about,” she said, as if on cue.
“I love you, in case you forgot,” he murmured.
“Silly-it’s not that. I mean….why? And when?”
“When? I suppose it started after the last battle,” Fred said thoughtfully. “I saw how much you really loved your friends-I knew it before, but to see it in action, and to find out how much you’d helped Harry- just amazed me. I guess that’s also a reason why I love you! But, er, moving on…”
Hermione giggled, and he poked her. “Don’t laugh at me when I’m pouring my heart out!”
“Sorry!” she exclaimed. “Go on.”
“Yes, I’m sure you’re loving this,” he said, poking her again. She squirmed against him and smiled up at him. “You’re right, I am,” she told him.
“I’d better get brownie points for this,” he muttered darkly.
“You’ve got enough brownie points to last yourself a lifetime,” she said. “Now finish!”
“All right, all right. Anyway, o beauteous goddess and queen of my heart-” it was her turn to poke him, but he ignored her- “I fell in love with you because you are you. Passionate, intelligent, fierce, loyal, sexy-Yes, I think you’re sexy! You’re laughing again!” He rolled over, pinning her to the couch. “I won’t let you up until you stop laughing at me!”
She opened her mouth and he kissed her before she could say anything. She started to speak again when he pulled back, but he dove in once more, stifling her words with another kiss. This time he tried to put everything he hadn’t said-or didn’t know how to say-into it, tried to communicate in the warm connection of their lips just exactly how much he felt for her. And when he drew away again, she was silent, her eyes locked on to his with such an intensity that he wanted to look away but at the same time found it impossible to do so.
They lay there for a long moment, her body warm beneath his. He could feel the way they fit perfectly together, like the two remaining pieces of a long-unfinished puzzle. Finally, she spoke, and it was with utter seriousness.
“Fred, I only laughed because-well-all the things you said just now are the reasons why I love _you._” Her smile returned as she reached up to tangle her fingers in his hair. “No matter what I told myself, no matter what anyone said, there was no getting around that. It had to be you.”
