Driftwood Church. Early Methodist church services in Driftwood were held in the Reaves School (1 mi. N) by the Rev. John Alexander Garison (1849-1933), who served other small Hays County communities as well. The congregation began meeting here in 1884 after this small frame sanctuary was completed. When the local Baptist church building was destroyed in 1911 the Methodist shared this structure with the Baptists. Both congregations have continued to hold services here and provide a Union Sunday School. Descendants of pioneer church members still worship at the Driftwood church. #10259

Corsicana Newspapers. The first newspaper in Navarro County, called the "Prairie Blade," began publication in 1855 and was owned by Dan Donaldson. By 1859 the paper was owned by R. A. Van Horn who changed its name to the "Navarro Express." Paper was in short supply with the coming of the Civil War, and the "Express" was issued only when paper was available. Publications begun in Corsicana in the 1870s and 1880s included the "Odd Fellowship and Literature," the "Texas Observer," a four-sheet journal called the "Corsicana Methodist," and a literary magazine called "The Texas Prairie." The "Corsicana Semi-Weekly Light" first appeared on September 7, 1888. The "Corsicana Daily Sun" began publication March 2, 1895. Both papers were owned by the Sun-Light Publishing Company by 1895. In 1962 the Harte-Hanks Newspaper chain purchased both papers and established the news coverage area as the "Golden Circle," which represented a 30-mile radius of Corsicana. Harte-Hanks built a new facility and sold the "Corsicana Daily Sun" to Worrell Newspapers in 1987. The paper changed owners later in 1987, then in November, 1991, the "Daily Sun" was purchased by the American Publishing Company. #11607

Gastown This clock is located at the western boundary of the old Granville Townsite, known as Gastown. In 1870, the shore of Burrard Inlet was only a few yards north of this point. through the early 1900's, Gastown was the commercial centre of Vancouver. By the 1960's, it had become the centre of Vancouver's 'Skid Road'. In the early 1970's , it was rehabilitated to its former stature. The success of its rehabilitation was due to property owners, retailers, and all the people of Gastown working together with city council and civic departments. The Townsite Committee, composed of the property owners of Gastown, were responsible for the beautification of the streets. John W. Parker served as Chairman of the Committee between Jan. 1967 to Sept. 1977.
