Here, it is proposed that Leucaena leucocephala, a tree species, has potential to be model tolerant species in seed research. Using flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy, cytological changes related to loss of DT in Leucaena primary roots were followed during germination. Leucaena seeds lost their DT at the end of germination and this coincided with an increase in cellular 4C DNA content. A negative correlation between the 8C DNA content and the capacity of germinating Leucaena seeds to tolerate desiccation was also observed. Apparently, the seeds of Leucaena underwent extra cycles of endoreduplication and accumulated a high content of DNA-an event not previously linked to DT. The ultrastructural damage imposed by drying overcame Leucaena primary root cell resilience and their ability to resume normal growth. Nuclear DNA content may be used as indicator of progress of germination and loss of DT in Leucaena.

After exploring the authorial self of Moschos, this article discusses the relation between this beneficial story and the biblical book of Jonah on the one hand, and Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis and Medea on the other. Finally, the story is examined in the wider framework of the seventh century, in an attempt to understand John Moschos’ viewpoint on his own time.

Macrina’s highly complicated profile is constructed on the basis of two identities: a public one that displays the conservative life of an obedient daughter and/or a grieving wife, and a secret one that allowed her to lead the life of a virgin, who challenged and revised the traditional role of women in late antique family. This secrecy, though not attributed to Macrina alone, but almost to every character in the Life, is one of Gregory’s key patterns. As argued, this was his way to create an exemplum of asceticism, parallel to that developed in the Life of Anthony, but which instead would be accessible to laymen and would not contradict directly the ideals and norms of the Greco-Roman city.

Macrina, Melania, Mary of Egypt or Syncletica personified this new model of virtue; but these were at the forefront of the narration. As a matter of fact in this same literature we meet other women in secondary roles, quite different from these brave and manly (ἀνδρεῖες) females. They were common women, who withstood the difficulties of the everyday life and had to cope with the violence of their environment, as husbands and other relatives, neighbors and strangers oppressed, maltreated, raped them.
This paper will focus on the violence which these women were subjected to. It is our aim to explore the patterns for the literary representation of this violence, its role in the text as well as the place it occupied in the imaginary horizon of the late antique society.

He stood by the bed of the dying woman and talked to her for the first time after eight years. When they remembered their departed brother Basil, Gregory started crying. By contrast, Macrina kept her self-control and took the opportunity to expound her views about human life and divine providence.
This is a striking scene indeed: A sentimental man mourning for his brother before a manly woman who resisted lament out of philosophical disposition.
As a crying man, Gregory was neither a unique nor an exceptional case. Starting with Achilles mourning for Patroclus and Priamus for his Hector in the Iliad, there was a long line of weeping men in Greek literary tradition. What was exceptional, if not revolutionary, was Macrina’s over-temperate attitude towards death. Whether Medea or Jerome’s Paula, the picture which ancient writers inherited to us is that of extremely passionate women.
But in the Life of Macrina sentimentality, and especially crying, was taken as a sign of weakness, an imperfection that must be overcome.
Taking this episode as a starting point, this paper will trace the change of the perception of tears in Late Antiquity and will investigate to what extent this affected the Roman ideal of masculinity.

Nevertheless, the late antique father remained a powerful symbol and a “conceptual tool” to prescribe and describe the relations in the administration, the army, the system of justice and the overall social domain. What is more, after 4th-century Christian theology, both in language and imagery, fatherhood became identified with the essence of God.
The role of the father in late antique family being still an intriguing subject of study, this paper aims to examine the effect of the death of the father to the other members of the family and, especially, how this loss changed their behaviour and way of life. Evidence will be drawn from epistolography, epigraphy, biography and hagiography.
For the Christian writers of Late Antiquity exploration of God’s nature was one of the greatest c... more For the Christian writers of Late Antiquity exploration of God’s nature was one of the greatest challenges. Whether adherents to the Nicene faith or Arians, they had to describe the properties of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, as well as the relationship between them. Inevitably, this effort led to the disconnection of properties from physical characteristics of a human person. Gender, age, or appearance, played no longer a decisive role in designating a person in the sense of “many that are first shall be last”, i.e., a general recomposition under new, less obvious and more internal criteria. As a result, such traditional values and ideals closely interwoven with gender as bravery (ἀνδρεία) were redefined so that women were then styled as brave or manly (ἀνδρεῖες γυναῖκες).
Gregory of Nyssa often refers to his older sister, Makrina, as being both his mother and teacher. Whereas their biological mother, Emmeleia, dealt very carefully with the raising of Makrina, she did not do so with her other children. As a matter of fact each child born after Makrina enjoyed less maternal care than the previous one, not only due to her consecutive pregnancies, but also to her inner refusal to accept the wife-mother role: Emmeleia wanted to devote herself to Christ and lead the life of a virgin. She was married only out of her fear to confront life alone and for the purpose of being under a man’s protection. As a result, Makrina gradually took over Emmeleia’s maternal duties.
Gregory also refers to his brother Basil as both his father and teacher. These two properties are so emphatically repeated in his work that the cursory reader may think that Gregory is speaking about his biological father.
In fact Gregory placed himself into two families: one kata physin with Basil the Elder as his father and Emmeleia as his mother, and one kata charin with his brother Basil of Caesaria and his sister Emmeleia replacing his parents.
This paper will investigate the complexities of the family relationships as well as the argument lying under Gregory’s endeavor to ‘recreate’ his family.

It deals with rules of inheritance and property division in ancient Greece, in the Roman and Byzantine Empires, in some Latin kingdoms and in mediaeval Islamic Egypt. The sources drawn upon for this book are varied: documentary sources, such as inscriptions, papyri and manuscripts containing petitions and wills, but also literary sources, legal documents and law codes. The book focuses on the impact religions had on family law and property transmission and offers insight on Greco-Roman religion, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
It deals with gender inequality in the Ancient and Mediaeval Mediterranean world.
