Positive Space at U of T (original) (raw)
Creating and identifying safer and more inclusive spaces for 2Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other sexual and gender diverse students, staff, faculty, librarians, and allies at the University of Toronto.
The Positive Space Campaign has raised 2SLGBTQ+ visibility at the University and focused on connecting 2SLGBTQ+ students, faculty, librarians, and staff at the University of Toronto since 1995. The Campaign continues to support our vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ communities through the work of volunteers across the three campuses who strive to make the University a place of inclusion and belonging every day.
The Campaign is largely advanced by Positive Space Committees on each of the University of Toronto’s three campuses, which welcome 2SLGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, librarians, and their allies to organize and participate in social events and educational programming.
Whether engaging in allyship by supporting fellow 2SLGBTQ+ classmates or colleagues, putting up a Positive Space poster or sticker in your community space, or getting involved with your campus’ Positive Space Committee, everyone can be part of creating Positive Space at the University of Toronto. If you are interested in learning more about and getting involved in our efforts across the University, browse through our campus pages or contact us today. What does “Positive Space” mean to you?
To mark the 20th Anniversary of Positive Space in 2015, the U of T Positive Space Committee created a project to engage students, staff, faculty, and librarians with the question “What does Positive Space mean to you?” at several events, including the St. George 5-Buck Lunch and the 20th Anniversary Brunch at Hart House. The U of T community got creative and shared their ideas for and visions of a more inclusive and 2SLGBTQ+ friendly campus. Check them out below!

Free to be *me*
Positive Space means the possibility of finding others like yourself, and creating supportive & nurturing communities!
Positive Space is pushing beyond norms. It’s not about marriage, it’s still about sex.
To contribute, to learn, to connect, to be free to be all I am, boundary-free.
When I enter the space, I enter the space, not my body.
Believe – be – bravery – become.
To be kind, to be sincere, and to be a friend.
Good food + friends.
Positive Space = surrounded by nice/kind people and more cookies!
A non-judgmental space. Peace and love.
Non-judgmental. Self-care. Compassionate. Open. Approachable. Kind. Understanding. Sympathetic. Woke.
Peace/love/fun.
Everyone gets cookies and ice cream!
Hot drinks like coffee, tea, for people who don’t like cold water. Clean table after meal ourselves.
Respect.
No pressure using the space, e.g. no people standing next to me waiting for my seat while I’m eating.
A place where everyone can be respected.
Create Positive Space by allowing others to learn & believe they have the best intentions. Meet ignorance with compassion so someone can grow/learn/change & spread the goodness.
Freedom
Being authentic.
Athlete-ally.
Be myself.
A safe place to be for everyone.
A place where we can all be ourselves!
Being able to be me in all my LGBTQ-ness.
A campus where everyone feels welcome and safe.
A safe space for learning and processing new knowledge. Inviting people in vs. shutting them out (sometimes physically even)!
