TGV-2N experimental set (Prototype for TGV Duplex), seen entering the Paris-Lyon HSL, heading South.

This set was formed in late-1991 with:

 3 newly-built double-deck trailers; and
The 2nd-class end-trailer of TGV PSE set No 70, remodelled as a lab; and
2 TGV Atlantique power-cars: 1 from set No 370 + 1 spare, then 2 from set No 330 (with TGV Rseau high-power brakes).
Later on, these were replaced with those from TGV Rseau set No 502.

This prototype ran trials until 1994, at up to 350km/h.

In 1995, the power-cars returned to revenue service, while the trailers were stabled.

TGV 9868 (Perpignan-->Bruxelles Midi/Brussel Zuid, via Lyon-Part Dieu and Lille-Europe), seen between Nmes and the beginning of LGV Mditerrane.

This service features a hybrid formation, namely:

o a Duplex set (front), running as a matter of relief on Montpellier St Roch-Lille Europe
o a Rseau (tri-voltage) set (rear), running throughout from Perpignan until Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid.

Hybrid TGV Duplex set No 257 (Batch 3), seen at Modane, after running on a Ski service.

While this set features Duplex trailers, 1 of its 2 power cars comes from TGV Rseau set 519 (Z-28038), whose single deck-trailers are now used on TGV POS set No 4401.

This is due to an accident which damaged 1 Duplex power car of set No 257 (Z-29114) in April 2004.

There is no restriction to such hybrid formations, as Duplex sets were originally to have TGV Rseau-style power cars (1989/1990). Only in 1992 did SNCF change its mind and opted for state-of-the-art power-cars.

Such formations will become common use from 2006 onwards, as 15 Duplex sets (bare trailers, batch 5) will get 30 (cascaded) TGV R power-cars.
In turn, 15x8 TGV R trailers are to be re-formed with 30 new POS power cars, so as to run on Paris-Zurich/Stuttgart/Frankfurt, using LGV Est.
