missy42's Brown Bear (original) (raw)

March 17, 2010 This project was a commission secured for me by MelodyDrama. One of her co-workers just had a baby boy, and she and another co-worker wanted a crochet amigurumi for him. After looking at some of my other ami projects on ravelry, she decided on a brown bear with white markings with a heart on the front belly. She also wanted it made entirely of natural fibers and natural filling.

MelodyDrama herself provided the cotton yarn. She also managed to find the bamboo stuffing, and asked if I could add a letter “G” onto the heart (the baby’s name starts with a “G”).

Embroidering the “G” on took many tries and much longer than I thought it would. But once it was done, I was really happy with how it looked. The same went for the embroidery on the muzzel. The heart, eyes and muzzle were easy enough to sew on and I managed to attach the ears with a slip stitch. Assembling the body and limbs was another issue. I always hate that bit of any amigurumi project.

When it came to attaching the first leg, I became incredibly frustrated. It just never seemed to end up in the place I want it and I inevitably ended up attaching, detaching and re-attaching the first leg several times. I used bobby pins to secure the rest of the limbs while I was sewing them on. That actually worked pretty well, though they was a little difficult to work around at times. Still, it was less time-consuming than my first attempt, and I think I may use that little trick for future amis.

Finally delivered the finished product to MelodyDrama on Monday night. She loved it. And now, I don’t have to worry about it.
