missy42's Tunisian "Drop Stitch" Scarf (original) (raw)

February 22, 2009 Length-wise Tunisian Simple Stitch scarf with two rows of DavidBurchall’s Tunisian “Drop Stitch,” a technique David developed himself. And, being the wonderful friend that he is, David was generous enough to share the secret to creating this stitch with me.

David gave the instructions as well as the yarn used in this project to me while my friend dragon_fall and I were visiting him. She liked the yarn (it’s so soft!) and the scarves David had created using his Tunisian “Drop Stitch.” So, naturally, I had to make dragon_fall something with this yarn and David’s technique.

I knew I wanted to make it lenght-wise, but I wasn’t about to do a scarves’-length worth of work just to see what different stitch patterns would look like. So I experimented with a couple different colours, widths and stitch sequences. photospice called it swatching. However, since I was doing these small rectangles for looks rather than for stitch and row sizing, I prefer to think of it more as the “pattern developing” stage. Anyway, I finally decided on the stitch sequence I liked in a solid green colour (The other colour I contemplated was a brown, but it just didn’t look good next to the green.)

I actually had the whole thing finished a couple of weeks ago. However, it wasn’t as long as I wanted it to be. Seeing as it was made length-wise, in order to make it longer, I had to rip it all the way back to the foundation chain. There, I added more chain stitches then worked the same stitch sequence as before. Finally, I worked a row of slip stitch into the last row of TSs for the “finished edge” look. Since the row of sl st isn’t nearly as stretchy as Tss, I worked the sl st row using the “N” hook, thus making each slip stitch larger and more flexible and preventing the final row from becoming stiff.

All I have to do now is finish weaving in the ends.

February 23, 2009 Wove in the ends last night. Now all it needs is a good steam to block it and remove some of the curl.

May 1, 2010 Finally blocked it yesterday. It lays so much better now. Gave it to dragon_fall last night. Since it was much too late for Christmas, we’re calling it a Beltane gift!
