two more Mercury 10 inch lps

Two more Mercury 10 inch lps. Basin Street signed by Maas, Billy Daniels not signed, but probably laid out by Maas also. I have one truly great Billy Daniels lp, but mostly his music is overproduced. Its a shame, he was a great singer.

Capitol 10 inch lps

All my Capitol 10 inch lps that I collected for the covers. Mostly not music I like. I love that the back cover of Le Sacre du Sauvage tells one how to pronounce it. America was a more innocent place then. The Jackie Gleason cover is by Salvador Dali. Which makes it a Salvador Dali print.

Mercury 10 inch lps, Maas

Almost every 10 inch Mercury lp I have. Only one of the Maas covers is signed, the rest are guesses based on style. Jan August was a fine cocktail piano player, I keep these with records I play. The rest are fun covers. I love the early embossed ones, I assume some of them are Maas also.

The letter C

Mostly some pretty obscure labels. I like the way Counterpart reused the William Steig drawing for two records. I like the way Crown pays homage to Josef Albers Persuasive Percussion records. I love when a label issues two different records with the same artwork in a different color scheme. And even Christian music occasionally had a good cover long ago.

Capitol Records in the 1950s

Everything that I have collected on Capitol just for the covers. I love some Steve Miller Band covers, but own those for the music. But these are just for the covers. The most remarkable one is the Salvador Dali, with a picture of Jackie Gleason with Dali in a photo op. Think of this as a large print run Dali print. Is Dali the most famous artist to ever design a cover, or would that be Andy Warhol?

D,E,F

The miscellaneous covers from my collection from the letters D,E and F. David Stone Martin covers for Dial can be highly collectible, if they contain jazz records. This one is for classical. I love the Tunisian one, Ennasham records. I would love to see the whole series. The Folkways cover is illustrated by Ben Shahn. One of the most famous serious artists to do record covers, along with Warhol, Albers and Dali. All of whom have shown up here at some point.

H to L

The other really interesting one here is the Calvin Jackson jazz record on Liberty. The material is velvet. There have been other velvet covers, and aluminum foil, and probably other strange materials.

M’s

Motivation records with covers by Leo Lionni, designer/illustrator of children’s books. Monitor was a short lived classical/foreign label, many great covers. One of these is by Ernest Socolov. Music Minus One had some great covers. MGM had very few nice covers in my opinion.

P’s, R’s, T’s – covers from the 50s and 60s

A bunch more covers that I bought for the cover, because I liked them for some reason. Period records- generic, then a really nice use of a classic painting. Philips – Jean Cocteau 1963. Really? Parliament – another Reid Miles proving he was more than a layout artist. Another Parliament – S.Maidoff, imitating Josef Albers. Parade – the artist is Alessandro. I like the different colors. Re-Jak-It – sold covers to people so they could move their records to new covers. This is the only one I have seen. Sonodor – W. Dressler and Joe Krush missing the point of the novel. Stand – Eleanor Steber 1962. Time – Murry Stein 1960. Tico – LeeMyles / Sandoval – Lee Myles is a big name in covers.
