Syllable, a User Friendly, POSIX Compatible Operating System (original) (raw)
Reducing software waste
Welcome on the new web site for the Syllable operating system project. Syllable is a unique and complete operating system that is easy to use, powerful, lightweight and extraordinarily fast and responsive. It has its own, tightly integrated kernel, file system, Graphical User Interface and applications, and also supports many cross-platform open-source programs. Syllable Server is a matching, small and efficient, companion Linux system. Syllable makes better use of your hardware by reducing waste in the software. It can make a new or tiny computer extremely fast and an old computer usable again.

Syllable Server
Road Map
Current priorities, in order. Syllable has been in hibernation for some time, but we are waking the sleeping beauty. There is no time schedule for these developments. Much depends on support from the community and funding by organisations. We can implement specific wishes when there is funding for them. In times when there is no funding, we will follow our own priorities, which usually follow the low-hanging fruit.
Done
- Use and develop the Meta web and download server to host new websites for Syllable and AtheOS.
- Create an archive of the old Syllable website, served by Meta.
- Set up a new archive of the AtheOS website and downloads, served by Meta.
- Create a new, modern, mobile-friendly website for Syllable, using the Meta Project web Content Management System and served by Meta.
- Create a new, custom forum for Syllable, using the Meta Project web application platform and served by Meta.
In Progress
- Gather relevant material, downloads and links, to make them available and to make the project infrastructure easier to maintain.
- Build an inclusive community, where anyone with good intentions can feel welcome.
Medium Term
- Update the contents of material and migrate it to the new Content Management System, to modernise it and make it easier to maintain.
- Release the Meta programming language for Syllable, to continue Syllable's innovation.
- Create a crowd-funding system using Meta, to fund the project and let users influence priorities.
Long Term
- Keep tracking the Meta Project to use its facilities for Syllable, as they develop.
- Use the Meta programming language for Syllable development, to further improve the quality and approachability of the system.
